BIBLICAL FESTIVALS

Spring Festivals & Holidays

Passover

Passover is the first Festival on the list of God’s Appointed Times in Leviticus 23. Passover is a celebration of the First Redemption, when God redeemed Israel out of her slavery to Egypt, and is a time to look forward to the Second Redemption when Messiah will return to reign as King over the entire earth. Passover encompasses the period when Jesus was crucified, buried and resurrected. By celebrating Passover, we declare His death and resurrection until He returns. Passover is a time to remove leaven from our homes and sin from our lives. It is a time to celebrate and remember freedom, salvation and miraculous redemption.

Pentecost

(Shavuot)

Pentecost is the 4th Festival on the list of God’s Appointed Times in Leviticus 23. Pentecost is the 50th day of the count of the Omer, linking the Festival of Passover to the traditional anniversary of the Giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai and the anniversary of the Giving of the Holy Spirit in Acts 2. Pentecost is a time to remember the reason God freed us from slavery, that we might worship/serve Him. It is a time to commit oneself to obeying God’s commands and to celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit Who causes us to walk in God’s statues (Ezekiel 36:27).

Fall Festivals & Holidays

Feast of Trumpets

(Rosh Hashanah)

Feast of Trumpets is the 5th Festival on the list of God’s Appointed Times in Leviticus 23 and is referred to as the Jewish New Year. Feast of Trumpets is a festival rich with symbolism, remembrance and anticipation. Perhaps the most significant symbol of this celebration is hearing the shofar blasts (traditionally 100 of them) which are likened to an alarm that warns us with urgency to repent and make things right. Scripture refers to this day as a Day of Remembrance (with shofar blasts). Though the Bible doesn’t specify what the remembrance is in honor of, the many theories ultimately point us to the Messiah, who will return to earth with a shofar blast, gather the exiles, resurrect the dead and usher in the Messianic Era.

Day of Atonement

(Yom Kippur)

The Day of Atonement is the 6th Festival on the list of God’s Appointed Times in Leviticus 23. Following Feast of Trumpets by just ten days, the Day of Atonement is the considered the holiest day of the year. It is a day of atonement (covering) but it is also a day of judgment. It is a day of national repentance, confession, fasting and prayer. The Day of Atonement also looks forward to the day when Messiah will declare the year of Jubilee: a declaration of freedom from bondage, remission of debt and forgiveness of sins.

Extra-Biblical Spring Festivals & Holidays

(festivals not a part of the original 7 festivals, but referenced within Scripture)

Purim

Purim commemorates the deliverance of the Jewish people in the ancient Persian Empire where a plot had been formed to destroy them. Haman, royal vizier to King Ahasuerus, planned to kill all the Jews in the empire, but his plans were foiled by Mordecai and Esther, who had risen to become Queen of Persia. The day of deliverance became a day of feasting and rejoicing and has been celebrated ever since.
